Package Character Creation Example
To illustrate character creation and the specific modifications for INTO THE REFT, here is Zanna Haber's package creation.

STEP 1 > STARTING STATS: Roll 2d6 six times and arrange the stat results as you wish. Results: 12, 4, 10, 10, 9, 7. STR 7 DEX 10 END 10 INT 9 EDU 12 SOC 4 STEP 2 > BACKGROUND PACKAGE: The Background Package takes the place of selecting background skills and the first term. Zanna wants to be an engineer. Looking through the background packages, her player decides between BELTER and SPACE HABITAT, choosing the later because it already has a level of Engineering (Life Support) and Mechanic 0, plus additional skills. She has a choice of specialties with her Electronics skill. Zanna chooses Computers. She also has a choice of specialties with the Profession skill. Zanna chooses Construction. Since the Science skill is at level zero, Zanna does not select a specialty. All of the skills are listed below. The SPACE HABITAT background adjusts Zanna's Stats: DEX +1 END -1 EDU +1. Additionally, SPACE HABITAT provides the benefits of Cr 5,000 and a Vacc Suit. Zanna chooses: SPACE HABITAT ADMIN 0 ASTROGATION 0 ATHLETICS (DEX) 1 ELECTRONICS (COMPUTERS) 1 ENGINEERING (LIFE SUPPORT) 1 MECHANIC 0 PROFESSION (CONSTRUCTION) 1 SCIENCE 0 STEWARD 0 STREETWISE 0 VACC SUIT 0 STEP 3 > CAREER PACKAGE: The Career Package takes the place of the character's entire career. Since Zanna wants to be an engineer, her player looks for a career package that best supplies the skills they want. Only the CORSAIR, SCOUT, and SPACER (CREW) career packages have the Engineering skill. The CORSAIR has it at level zero. CORSAIR is discarded as an option. Both SCOUT and SPACER (CREW) have Engineering (Any) at level one. Zanna's player chooses SCOUT because it also has the ever useful Jack-of-all-Trades skill which will reduce the penalty for unskilled checks. She can select her specialty in Engineering and chooses Jump Drive. Any duplicated skills are increased if they are gained at level one, or ignored if they are granted at level zero. All of the skills are listed below. The SCOUT career package also adjusts Zanna's Stats: INT +1. Additionally, SPACE HABITAT provides the benefits of Cr 25,000 and 3 Contacts (spacers or contacts on distant worlds). To round out the character, Zanna's player is allowed to select one option from three table (plus I add two more from any of the three tables).
CAREER: There are three options on the Career table. Zanna's player chooses the second one: Increase any 3 skills listed in the Traveller’s career package at any level by one each, to a maximum of 2. The only options are from her career package that were offered at level 1: ASTROGATION, ELECTRONICS (COMPUTERS), ENGINEERING (JUMP), JACK-OF-ALL-TRADES, STREETWISE, and VACC SUIT. Zanna chooses to increase ELECTRONICS (COMPUTERS), ENGINEERING (JUMP), and VACC SUIT, raising each by one level.
TRAVELLER SKILLS: On the skills table there are twelve options of two skills each. Currently, Zanna is an okay engineer, but she can be better, so her player chooses option 8: ENGINEERING (ANY) and ELECTRONICS (ANY). Although the skills are supposed to be taken at level one, I will allow them to be used to increase current skills. Zanna selects ENGINEERING (MANEUVER) and ELECTRONICS (REMOTE OPERATIONS).
BENEFITS: The Benefits table has six options. Zanna chooses TAS Membership. The Traveller's Aid Society is a very useful benefit.
For the two additional selections, Zanna selects one on the career table and one on the skills table:
CAREER: This time Zanna's player chooses the first option: Increase any skill offered at level 1 or above in the Traveller’s career package to level 4. Zanna chooses to increase JACK-OF-ALL-TRADES. JoT is a special skill, the only one of its kind. It is limited to level three, so raising to level four cannot happen, but it can be raised to three. Even though Zanna loses one level for selecting JoT, she completely eliminates the -3 penalty to all uses of a skill she is not skilled in. JoT is the most sought after skill because it essentially makes the character level zero in all skills. Zanna is truly versatile.
